Pots with saucers

  • When using a saucer or drainage tray to protect your deck or patio remember that the pot can be sitting in water for an extended period of time during winter months. Special care needs to be taken so these pots will not freeze and break.

Elevation is preservation

  • Cracked pots are normally caused by water freezing and expanding inside the material the pot is made from. The more porous the material, the greater the chance of this happening. Elevating the pots with pot feet or a plant stand are great ways to allow proper drainage and airflow to help avoid water build up.

Seal the pots

  • In addition to elevating pots the inside of outdoor pots can be sealed to minimize the amount of water the pot material can absorb. Several products are available for this application including terra cotta pot sealer, and masonry or water based sealers.

Terra cotta pots

  • Dilute a little vinegar in warm water to get new looking terra cotta pots. We recommend letting moss grow and going with a more natural look. However, when changing planting the pots should be disinfected according the directions below.

Metal pots

  • Metal pots usually develop a nice aged patina over time. We do not recommend washing this patina off, but understand that the new look is sometimes the desired look. For metal or zinc pots use a solution of diluted CLR or a similar product with water. Be careful to test an unseen area to make sure the solution does not remove the finish.

Changing plants and reusing pots

  • When changing the plants in a pot or reusing a pot from season to season it is a good idea to disinfect the pot. Pots accumulate mineral deposits and other debris that can cause disease. Disinfect the pots with a diluted solution of bleach and water. Follow this by washing the pots in a solution of water and dish detergent.
